As emission regulations become more stringent it is necessary to protect emission control systems so that they retain their efficiency over the life of the vehicle. For this purpose, restrictions have been placed on the engine oil components that can have a negative impact on catalysts and particulate traps. Sulfur and phosphorous are under scrutiny since these two elements decrease efficiency of catalysts, and sulphated ashes are known to plug particulate traps. In addition, greater attention is paid to the reduction of engine friction in order to reduce fuel consumption and CO{sub}2 emissions.
