One of the types of surface treatment using the Wonder Process Craft (WPC) surface treatment method for pistons of internal combustion engines is the micro dimple (MD) treatment for piston. This treatment simultaneously improves resistance to seizing, reduces sliding resistance, and improves mechanical properties. A new technology has been established that applies WPC treatment and allows the solid lubricant, molybdenum disulfide (MoS{sub}2), to adhere without the need for a binder, resulting in a sliding resistance 2.5 times less than that experienced with MD treatment and 3.6 times less than that with coating. This paper gives an overview of the MoS{sub}2 shot treated piston, the first example of this application in the world.
