The existing Performance-Based seismic design codes describe the performance objectives of the buildings by introducing some qualitative performance levels that are not very well understood by building owners and investors. Another deficiency of the existing codes is that their main objective is to design buildings to preserve the safety of the occupants, without considering the economic loss that the building may sustain during an earthquake. All these, has led the researchers to look for other quantitative performance measures. Using economic loss as a criterion for assessing the performance of the buildings was among these efforts. However, some of the currently available methods for loss estimation are complicated, thus inappropriate for ordinary engineering practice. In this paper an existing story-based loss estimation approach is considered to investigate the seismic-induced loss due to near field earthquakes in comparison to the far field ones. The selected method facilitates the evaluation of the seismic performance of the buildings under earthquake excitation by dividing the building value and the resulting economic loss into its stories. Then, to calculate the damage in each story, performance groups with their own specific fragility functions are defined for different building components. The efficiency of the story-based loss estimation method in assessing the influence of the ground motion record types (near field or far field records) on the performance of buildings is investigated.
