A consistent transmitting boundary is a versatile tool for problems of layered soil dynamics. It maintains the strengths and advantages of the finite-element method and can be easily applied to complex problems. A continued-fraction absorbing boundary condition (CFABC) is an arbitrarily high-order local absorbing boundary condition that is effective in modeling wave propagation in various unbounded domains. It is compatible with domain-based numerical methods such as finite elements and can be implemented to any desired degree of accuracy. In this study, the CFABC is combined with the consistent transmitting boundary in a cylindrical coordinate system and applied to an analysis of dynamic soil-structure interaction and foundation dynamics in a half-space. It is shown that behaviors of the improved transmitting boundary are excellent in the entire frequency range and successful for a rigorous analysis of wave propagation in a half-space.
