The aim of the present paper is to investigate the relationship between damage location and corresponding changes in the natural frequencies and mode shapes of damaged cables. The mathematical model used accounts for sag, bending stiffness and boundary conditions effects. A finite difference formulation is used to discretize the obtained equations. The basic elements of the formulation are briefly reviewed for convenient reference. Salient features of in-plane and out-of-plane free vibrations of damaged suspended cables are discussed.
