In recent times, the importance of information security in space communication systems has increased even for civilian missions especially in the light of upcoming earth observation, navigation and crisis management programs. In order to meet those new requirements with both cost and time efficiency, a generic set of open standards based on existing systems has to be developed for the ground segment. Today, security systems are still developed individually for each mission causing high development and maintenance costs. In this paper, we present a security reference architecture for CCSDS compliant space missions. We show that the advantages through transparency and interoperability greatly reduce the cost factor for security systems.
