Characterising Adaptors Used in RF and Microwave Measurements

Adaptors are often used in RF and microwave measurements to connect transmission lines or devices with different types of connectors. This introduces insertion loss and mismatch errors. This paper describes methods to characterise such adaptors using scattering parameters measured by a vector network analyser (VNA). The uncertainties of power measurements introduced by the adaptors are also analysed and calculated. Recent measurement results on an international comparison on RF power with 2.4 mm connectors have shown that the method is valid.
