Temperature is one of the seven base SI units. Temperature is one of the most important control parameters in many processes. However, there are no economical and convenient ways to monitor temperatures in many harsh environments, such as in a BOF furnace and in a tundish in steelmaking. The main reasons for this are: (a) for a contacting sensor, the medium (e.g. molten steel) measured is at such a high temperature and is chemically corrosive that most sensors cannot survive for sustained periods of time; (b) for a non-contacting sensor, the smoke, dust and other matter between the sensor and the measured medium may have an influence on the measurement to the point that it may not be accurate enough for monitoring and controlling the process.
