Dynamic simulations of a boundary layer diffusion flame in the presence of water droplets show that suppression in local gas temperature is the highest at the leading edge of the flame. The simulations show that the droplets caused the flame to detach from the surface and form into a pocket of burning fuel gas, which is transported past the fuel surface resulting in extinction. Therefore, the flame seems to extinguish by an event of detachment followed by blow-off. This mechanism is observed visually in our experiments when water droplets are introduced with the forced air flow.
