Spreadsheet Design: Simple Steps for Turning User-vicious into User-friendly

Designing metallurgically complex yet user-friendly spreadsheets is a special challenge to technical personnel - particularly when, as at ArcelorMittal, the users are spread across several continents and languages. In this paper, we present a number of changes that can make the difference between, "Oy!" and "Wow" when a user opens a new spreadsheet, and illustrate by example how a complex scrap-purchase optimization spreadsheet was made into a pleasant and therefore a more productive tool.
