Metallurgical coke is normally made from a blend of coals, carbonized (heated in the absence of air) in slot or non-recovery coke ovens. The choice of coals by the coke-maker depend on a number of factors including costs, coal quality and the targeted coke quality produced from the blend. Coke quality has a direct impact on blast furnace throughput and fuel needs and is assessed using coke chemical and physical characteristics. Coke size, shape and strength are important attributes to maintain furnace permeability to achieve high throughput and low fuel rates. Coals are carefully selected for coking blends to ensure the coke produced has these necessary high strength properties.
