Notwithstanding improvements in exhaust emissions near stationary road traffic is enormously environmentally unfriendly. Rail very inflexible/limited network, highly capital intensive. High cost of maintaining networks to modern safety standards. Heavy indivisible loads highly restricted and intrusive.
