National Digital Mammography Archive

The National Digital Mammography Archive (NDMA) represents a collaborative effort among the following: the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (including both the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the National Scalable Cluster Project [NSCP]); the University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill; the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre of the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; the Technical Computing (TC) division of BWXT Y-12, Oak Ridge, Tenn; and LAI Technologies, Chicago, Ill. Other members of the team included researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, Tenn), Texas Tech University (Lubbock), and the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), all of which were subcontractors to the TC team. The goal was to develop a test bed that demonstrates the feasibility of an integrated, scalable, national breast imaging archive and network infrastructure for digital mammography. The overall intent was to provide a data-rich dynamic resource that crosses health care enterprises and provides clinicians and researchers with the ability to access images, data, and reports wherever they are needed. The chapter will focus on the original concept for the archive, its major functionality, and the issues raised and lessons learned through the testing and integration process.
