We present background information of a paper [5] that investigated several stable source selection processes and proposed a list of 199 stable sources that could be used for a future improvement of the ICRF. Their expected performance in maintening the direction of the ICRF axes (± 6 μas) is better by a factor of four or five than that of the current 212 ICRF defining sources.
