IMPRINTED POLYMERS FOR HEAVY METAL ION REMOVAL FROM WATER

Wastewater treatment is an important process in society due to the health risks associated with polluted drinking water. Currently, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are used to remove pollutants and impurities from wastewater. Besides being toxic to humans, studies have shown that compounds such as toluene, heavy metal ions and ammonia greatly inhibit the effectiveness of bacteria involved in treating wastewater due to their toxicity to the bacteria. Wastewater treatment could be improved if these compounds were removed before the water is treated with bacteria.
