As the United States works to transition from a petroleum hased economy to one powered by renewables, catalytic conversion of these resources will play an important role. Hydrogen is a key component of many industrial reactions and is generally formed by the non-renewable steam reforming of natural gas. Cortright et al. have demonstrated oxygenated hydrocarbons (C:O = 1:1) can be reformed in the aqueous phase to produce hydrogen and CO2.
