Detailed characterization of the acidic species in crude oil is hampered by the wide range of chemical functionalities that contain heteroatoms (specifically N, O, and S). Simply, variations in ionization efficiency between the chemical types of heteroatoms can mask or enhance their detection in mass spectrometry. In negative electrospray ionization, carboxylic acids (oxygen) typically dominate the mass spectrum even though nitrogen and sulfur are many times more abundant.
