Arsenic is a naturally occurring substance found in a variety of combined forms in the earth1. In drinking water, it is mostly found as trivalent arsenite (As(III)) or pentavalent arsenate (As(V)). Among all sources and forms of arsenic all over the world, drinking water represents one of the most severe threats to public health. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that long-term exposure to arsenic via drinking water causes cancer and other health effects in humans. EPA has also lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic in drinking water from 50ppb to 10ppb.
