Sorption interactions of tetracyclines,fluoroquinolones and sulfonamides with whole soils were investigated using batch sorption experiments.Compounds from the same antibiotic family generally had sorption coefficients(K_d)that are within 0.3 log unit of each other.Multiple stepwise regression analyses were conducted to determine the correlation between antibiotic sorption and soil properties.Tetracycline sorption at pH 5 correlated with the soil oxide content while fluoroquinolone sorption was mainly affected by the soil cation exchange capacity.Organic carbon content was the most important soil property for sulfonamide sorption.The regression equation for oxytetracycline at pH 5 was able to predict OTC K_d values for other whole soils within a factor of six.The results of this study indicated that(a)antibiotics from the same family generally have similar sorption behavior and(b)sorption coefficients for veterinary antibiotics can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from soil properties.
