Although biomass has the potential to provide a substantial portion of our energy needs, its current contribution is small. Recent progress suggests that biomass may provide a greater part of our need for clean fuels . One way to utilize biomass is to convert it to liquid fuels via gasification, subsequent catalytic Fischer Tropsch synthesis and finally product upgrading. The aim of this work is to study the effect of Cu promotion on the physical properties of an Fe-Mg-based catalyst. Magnesium increases C5+, selectivity, improves stability, increases BET surface area, facilitates carburization, and suppresses CH4 formation, while Cu increases the reduction potential of the iron oxide. Tests on the F-T activity of this catalyst are underway and will be reported in a separate communication.
