Oxides catalyze several interesting reactions that convert alkanes to higher-value products. Unfortunately, in most cases, the conversion or the selectivity are not good enough for commercial application. This has prompted quite a bit of research aimed at modifying oxide surfaces to improve their catalytic properties. In this talk we present computational and experimental work that explores whether replacing some of the cations of an oxide with cations of a different kind (substitutional cation doping) may help improve oxide catalysts. We are particularly concerned with reactions in which one breaks the carbon-hydrogen bond in an alkane or one activates CO.
