The catalytic role of zeolites in fluidized catalytic cracking processes traditionally has been related to the presence of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites in the zeolite pores. Recent evidence indicates that redox sites can also be created in zeolites under conditions that are not too different from the conditions that FCC catalyst is exposed in the regenerator of the FCC reactor. These redox sites can alter the activity and selectivity of zeolites to cracking, dehydrogenation and coke formation. Here recent results that illustrate what potential role these sites may have are discussed.
