ASIC3 Mediates Mechanical Hyperalgesia-Induced by Muscle Injury

Chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes include inflammatory and noninflammatory conditions such as myositis and fibromyalgia. Patients with chronic pain show decreases in mechanical pain thresholds not only at the site of injury, but also in remote areas (Berglund et al. 2002; Leffler et al. 2002). This chapter describes the contribution of ASIC3 to mechanical hyperalge-sia induced by muscle injury. The animal models used mimic chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain of inflammatory and non-inflammatory origin.
