The Telecom industry is rapidly transitioning from a proprietary based Operating System (OS) to Linux. The cost of development and time to market is increasing for proprietary OS. The pool of expertise for these OS and the demand for such equipments are shrinking with companies trying to cut costs while embarking on supporting new technologies such as Long term Evolution (LTE). It is inevitable to move towards a platform which provides much widely accepted talented pool of developers such as the Linux community. The present trend is to develop the next generation telecom equipments on open standard Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) platforms. This is found to be less risky and accommodative of future technologies and hence cost effective for the equipments that are delivering a rich set of communication services.
