One of the major trends for the last years in the masterbatch industry was to control costs whilst maintaining high efficiency. How can this be in accordance with the situation that the masterbatch industry is continuously obliged to develop new product for new colors and with special effects;striving for differentiation to satisfy the end-user's desire ? Background of this papers is the intention to prove that both objectives, cost effectiveness and high levels of quality and innovations are not necessarily in conflict. The content of this paper will outline how additives,as dispersing additives, improve cost and process performance and help to differentiate in a competitive environment.Dispersing additives based on amphiphilic block copolymers interact particularly well with polar pigment surfaces without losing their compatibility in polyolefinic matrices. As they exhibit excellent thermal stability, the use of such additives is not restricted to polyolefins but can be extended to engineering plastics processed at elevated temperatures.Numerous trials were carried out according to established industry standards using various pigments. The superior quality of the pigment masterbatch is evident in the high numbers achieved for color strength and the lower values for filter pressure tests.Production cycles can be fastened by modifying the rheological properties of the masterbatch. In general the production process of a masterbatch is dominated by some main criterions. These are mixing, lubrication and dispersion steps, certainly not to forget the overall composition of the masterbatch.
