This case study shares the success factors that allowed the rapid deployment of a frontline, operational MALE UAS ISR service four months after contract award. MDA currently provides Unmanned ISR services to both the Canadian and Australian Defence Forces in Afghanistan. For both countries, MDA delivered an operational capability using the IAI Heron UAS. Canadian operations began in January 2009, and Australian operations began in January 2010. This paper speaks to the challenges in achieving such compressed deployment schedules, including rapid staff development & deployment, inservice support challenges, standing-up an operational conversion and training unit, and pursuing accreditation & certifications from various regulatory bodies under compressed timelines.
