Case Study-Start-Up and Operation of Deep Rock Connector Tunnel and Pump Station, Indianapolis, Indiana

The Deep Rock Connector Tunnel (DRTC) and Pump Station (PS) were placed into service in December 2017 and March 2018, respectively. The tunneling contractor (JF Shea JV) was responsible for the construction of the tunnel, three CSO diversion structures, and a common Launch/PS Screen and Grit shaft. The pump station contractor (Renda Southland JV) was responsible for constructing a pump station within an underground cavern excavated in rock. This paper will discuss how the work and scheduling challenges were overcome in order to have the facilities in operation by the mandated Consent Decree dates.
