FEAST - A New Model for International Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation

This paper examines the rationale for establishing mechanisms to encourage international cooperation with particular reference to the Forum for European-Australian Science and Technology cooperation (FEAST). It reviews the dependence of the worldwide knowledge economy on international cooperation and examines the roles of mobility, networking and public-private partnerships in the development and sharing of knowledge. The paper reviews current European-Australian linkages, priorities and common goals and outlines some consequent strategies and outcomes of the FEAST initiative over its two-year lifetime. FEAST bears many similarities to the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Initiative (IMS) and the two are compared and contrasted as models for international technological cooperation.
