The anti-seismic damping properties of Fe-30Mn-(6-x)Si-xAl (x=0, 1, 2 and 3) alloys, which cover the Fe-30Mn-Si shape memory alloy and Fe-30Mn-3Si-3Al TWIP steel, were evaluated by low cycle fatigue tests. The microstructural evolution in the alloys during tension and subsequent compression was observed with atomic force microscopy. The dominant deformation microstructure changes from the stress-induced hcp martensite to the mechanical fcc twin with increase of the Al content. The former transforms to the fcc austenite by the subsequent compression, while the latter retains after compression.
