The first designs and clinical experience of a novel spinal system, consisting of a single square SMA spinal rod used in conjunction with pedicle screws and connection bridges for posterior spinal fixation, are reported. The full spinal system is being developed in several phases, primarily for the 3-dimensional treatment of scoliolitic deformities [1], Initial implantations have focussed on disorders of the lumbar spine, to confirm clinical safety and efficacy, stabilization capabilities and acceptance of using a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) for such surgical indications. Designs and preliminary clinical data are presented here.
