A Survey on Current and Future Pervasive Computing Devices and Applications

Pervasive computing technology makes the actual computing and communication essentially transparent to the users which allow easier and seamless interaction of computers with humans. A pervasive computing environment is a collection of embedded, wearable, and handheld devices (such as PDA) wirelessly connected, possibly to fixed network infrastructures such as the Internet. This paper examines pervasive computing devices and their applications, a short history of these products, what's available in today's marketplace, and what's on the horizon. Specifically addressed are consumer devices, such as cell phones, smart phones, PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), Pocket PCs, watches, and apparel, although many of these devices also have business applications. Our analysis focuses on two major categories: This paper covers current and future pervasive computing devices, their usage, economic impact, and technology used. It also addresses what is on the horizon for these devices and applications, and problems and societal concerns.
