Retained Austenite Stability in the Cold Rolled CMnAlSiP Micro-Alloyed TRIP Steels

Zackay et al. pioneered TRansformed-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) in metastable austenitic steels. They found that the ductility increased significantly as the metastable austenitic phase transformed to martensite in Fe-Cr-Ni stainless steels. This original finding eventually led to the development of dispersed phase low alloy TRIP-aided high strength steels, which combine high strength, high formability and high dynamic energy absorption during high strain rate deformation. Therefore TRIP steels are suitable for body-in-white applications, which require the use of the high strength thinner gauge sheet steel in order to reduce fuel consumptions and emissions by reducing passenger car weight. The use of high strength TRIP sheet steel also leads to a better passenger safety by an improved crash-worthiness.
