The global steel community is now experiencing its third cycle of high interest in the so-called TRIP-assisted multi-phase steels. The first occurred in the mid-1960s when Bresanelli and Moskowitz showed how the strain-induced transformation of metastable austenite in T301 austenitic stainless steel suppresses necking and increases the uniform strain. This concept was exploited by the Zackay group who showed that both high strength and high ductility could be obtained by using the TRIP phenomenon, again in austenitic stainless steels but with high carbon content. Unfortunately, these steels never became commercially successful.
