400kV AC - 2 × 1000MW SUBMARINE CABLE CROSSING OF THE DARDANELLES STRAIT IN TURKEY

The paper describes the planning, design, testing, installation and commissioning of the double circuit 2×1000 MW - 400 kV submarine cable crossing of the Dardanelles Strait in Turkey. The construction of the cable system and the associated 400 kV OHL TLs have been economically justified for the transmission to Istanbul, via the Western corridor (Trakya), of a large part of the power generated by the power plants located along the Southern coast of the Marmara Sea. The system planning, the Dardanelles crossing site selection, the submarine cable route survey and technical specification have been performed by TEIAS and associates. A switching and temporary overvoltages analysis with the ATP - EMTP program, jointly performed by TEIAS and Prysmian, has been necessary because the cable crossings are the intermediate section of mixed overhead-cable-overhead lines, causing a concern on the resonance on harmonics and some switching operations. The results of the study are briefly reported. This power transmission system was commissioned in April 2015 (6 XLPE insulated cables + 1 spare cable) and is one of the very few EHV AC submarine cable crossings with extruded insulation worldwide. A 2nd similar adjacent 2×1,000 MW - 400 kV is under construction at the time of writing.
