Wide-area coordinated and adaptive damping control of multiple HVDC links in China Southern Power Grid

A Wide-Area Damping Control System (WADC) has recently been developed in China Southern Power Grid to enhance the damping of inter-area oscillations. It's the first time that PMU measurements are used as input to a continuous feedback control system in a real bulk power grid. The Wide-Area damping control system is implemented on the modulation of two HVDC links. The control system consists of phasor measurements at six 500 kV substations, fiber-optic communications, real-time control computers, control units at rectifier station and interface between HVDC and WADC. This paper introduces the designing aspects of the WADC and the subsequent implementation and operation issues. Results of closed-loop testing in the field will be presented. The paper concludes with a future development of the wide-area control in CSG.
