Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) are gaining increasing interest for applications in the field of grid ancillary services, due to their high flexibility use allowed by Power Conversion System's (PCS) performance. For such reason, in the scope of Terna's pilot projects, no limitations have been detected in advance in the attempt to implement, at EESS level, as many grid ancillary services as prescribed in the Italian Grid Code. Taking into consideration a predictable quick and wide spreading of EESS technology into transmission and distribution grids, said flexibility has given the opportunity to design and implement all grid ancillary services in addition to further functionalities (e.g. synthetic rotational inertia) so as to provide the adequate facilities, in terms of regulation capabilities, for a stable and reliable grid operation. Terna's pilot projects aimed to take advantage of such these technical features for the enhancement, where appropriate, of ancillary services response: specific calibration for each service may allow higher performances than those granted by traditional power plants. Other critical aspects concerns with the extension of functionalities pertain to SCADA systems either of local EESS plant or Terna's remote one. Specific way of synthetic representation of real-time EESS's state as long as new list of commands for admitting interaction between EESS plant and remote SCADA have been designed and developed on purpose so as to exploit said capabilities.
