The shift of the global coating industry to better environment friendly coatings with ever increasing demand for best corrosion resistance has given rise to new challenges to the coil coating sector also. The new generation coil coatings have undergone a thorough change starting from the pre-treatment to the finishing coating to successfully meet those requirements. The emphasis has been to replace the hexavalent chromium with more environmental friendly metals at all stages without compromising the corrosion resistance and adhesion of the total coating system. At the same time the growing demand for longer durability and higher flexibility in the coating system to meet the exacting condition of the new applications has led to the development of a host of new binders. These binders not only accommodate very well the changes in the pre-treatments and pigmentations while keeping the inter-coat adhesion but also perform excellently in natural exposures like never before. In this paper, some of these developments are discussed and reviewed vis a vis our own in house developments to these new challenges.
