The oxidation studies presented in this paper allow for the following conclusions: Morphology of the Al_2O_3 scales formed during the high-temperature oxidation of the FeCrAl-type steel depends on temperature and on the composition of the oxidizing atmosphere. The plate-like structure with a large surface area on the outer side of the Al_2O_3 scale develops at high concentrations of SO_2 and low concentrations of O_2 and at temperatures lower than 850 deg C. The plate-like structure is built of theta-Al_2O_3. Al_2O_3 is the only constituent of the oxide scale There was no evidence of sulfide inclusions in the Al_2O_3 layer.
