It should be emphasized the issues described above are just a very few of the total points or strategies which may be implemented by a building owner in the interest of achieving LEEDTM certification, but the intent was to focus on those items which have the greatest impact on achieving "high performance" of building systems. The USGBC recognizes that buildings account for 65% of total U.S. electrical consumption, and over 35% of primary energy use.18 Clearly, a new generation of "smarter", high performance buildings, designed to consume less energy, is an encouraging trend for everyone, and one in which the professional energy services community will play a vital role. When this trend begins to develop in your area, it will clearly have an impact on energy consumption levels. The real challenge for future planning will be to balance the aggressive energy consumption targets inherent in the LEEDTM rating system with the actual energy related performance of buildings, which may be very divergent. It is important to initiate a program of continuous monitoring and updating of system performance, to maintain the "high performance" expectations.
