Real-time optimization was applied to the kraft pulp mill benchmark. The optimum was obtained with a modified version of an IMC-based optimization method. This technique uses simplified static models to accelerate the convergence. To improve the performance, the model parameters were estimated on-line and the total cost of the bleaching section was reduced by 10.6 %.
