Cationic surfactants became important when their strong antimicrobial properties were discovered, including the highlight of the importance of surfactants properties for antimicrobial activity. The aim of this work is to know the impact of surfactant properties of such molecules on antimicrobial activity. We describe the synthesis, surface activity properties and antimicrobial characteristics of highly fluorinated Gemini surfactants. We have studied a series of amide types through the variation of the spacer bonding the two ammonium heads. We have found this parameter to have a modulating effect on antimicrobial activity. The fluorinated chains are the main contributors to the hydrophobicity of such surfactants and can be put in correlation with bacteriostatic activities.
