Active exchange of ideas and thoughts is a key element in bringing about new solutions and procedures. Therefore, a research environment should be scientifically inspiring, challenging and interactive. It also should be sufficiently versatile in terms of the research fields represented and the human and material resources available. New scientific breakthroughs and technologies are of key significance especially in the development of complex innovations. These include innovations that profoundly change existing modes of activity. In this context research cooperation between business companies, public sector, and universities has immediate relevance as a foundation for new innovations. In this paper, we describe efforts of establishing an interdisciplinary, collaborative unit for innovative research and development in Jyvaskyla, Finland.
