This study was performed for a purpose of developing a passive sampler, which can quantify formaldehyde in indoor air by sampling for about 1 hour. This study was investigated by using the method described as follows: Formaldehyde reacts with 1-hydrazinophthazine to produce s-triazolo [3,4-a] -phthalazine, formaldehyde concentration can be measured from fluorescence of the production by High Performance Liquid Chromatogaph with fluorescence detector. Passive sampler packed with alkali-impregnated silica gel of 0.8g in a porous tube made from polytetrafluoroethylene resin was prepared. The uptake rate of the passive sampler is 3.06 mu. g/ppm/hr, which is equivalent to 42ml/min of sampling rate of a pump method. The repeatablity of the passive sampler is 6.9 percent in coefficient of variation. The passive sampler can be measured up to 10 ppb of formaldehyde with 1 hour sampling. The measured value of present method and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine active sampler method agreed well.
