The flood of personal digital photo collections creates a challenge as to how people retrieve their ever increasing store of digital photos. In this paper, we examine how digital photo users retrieve their personal photos. An exploratory study involved seven digital photo users who were generally familiar with personal computers especially with Windows based applications. On average, each individual had more than 500 personal digital photos in their collection and was familiar with the photo contentswhich related to their life and memories. Each of them was asked about their current practice and problems. They then gave their opinion of possible helpful features for retrieving their personal digital photos. From the results, the authors address users' needs and current practices in retrieving their personal digital photos and prioritise user needs in relation to developing digital photo retrieval technologies.
