This paper introduces a robust XML-based system following the guidelines for ubiquitous applications. This basically leads to simple user interfaces for mobile devices as well as large screens and the ability to join and leave a session at any time. To achieve these aims, a RESTful web service with multiple levels of security has been developed and a Relax NG data schema has been used to both define and verify all the XML-based resource documents generated by the web service. Localization has been designed for the system to allow for the system to be utilised in Europe. The service is controllable by both a multi-lingual client and a web application. A response system has been used as a case study for this research and with its flexible setup options is successfully applied in lectures.
