When 1-2 companies go down one can blame it on poor strategy and/or poor execution but when a malaise is spread across the entire global industry one has to question the business model ( ala dotcom) · Why the carnage; · pool prices largely collapsed more than anticipated in merchant markets; · Individual emerging markets failed to develop as fast or as much as initially expected; · Too much competition between developers ( e.g Pakistan) led to overbuilding ( as compared to say Bangladesh); · Trying the wrong model without understanding the market led to PPA's not being honored; · e.g. bringing expensive power to poor countries ("If you build it, they will pay") · Lack of downstream reform ( in T&D and electricity tariffs) in many countries placed an unacceptable burden on IPP offtakers - every additional MW signed only accelerated their financial downfall · Both IPP Development and M&A models were flawed.
