Overview of the Naval Sea Systems Command Efforts to Prevent Pollution From Ship Coating Operations（文摘）

The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), Materials & Environmental Engineering Directorate, as the Navy's technical authority for paints, coatings, and environmental technology has ongoing efforts to improve the performance of Navy coatings while simultaneously reducing the environmental impacts of the painting process. The need to improve coating system performance while reducing the adverse environmental impacts from coating processes is readily apparent in the Navy's efforts to reduce ship maintenance cycle times. To address these performance and environmental challenges, NAVSEA 05M, with support from the Chief of Naval Operations, is in the third year of four-year effort to reformulate all Navy coatings to improve performance while simultaneously reducing VOC levels by at least 25%. NAVSEA 05M also recently initiated a program to reduce maintenance cycle time and improve coating quality through the use of high-solids, rapid-cure coating systems. In addition to these projects, NAVSEA 05M is working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop Uniform National Discharge Standards for Navy ships that will establish regulatory limits on metal discharges from the antifouling coatings used on ship hulls.
