Studies on early ontogeny in fish help to understand the changes in structure and function which is a consequence of rapid morphological, physiological and behavioural transformations that are faced by embryos, larvae and juveniles during their earlylife history. These studies could also be helpful for design of management procedures that should be adopted for fish rearing under controlled conditions. In fish culture it is essential to know the state of development of embryos, larvae and juveniles,because the success during farming depends on the application of appropriated techniques to their needs. Therefore, at the Laboratory of Nutrition of Aquatic Organism of the Aquaculture Center, in Brazil, we have been developing research to detail some aspects of the early development of the sensorial system (SS) in Neotropical freshwater fishes of commercial interest in South America.
