DOMESTICATION OF FISH - SOME LEGAL CONSEQUENCES IN THE ENGLISH COMMON LAW

Humans have for many thousands of years manipulated various populations of animals for their own purposes. This has resulted in a number of those populations being described as domesticated. More recently humans have turned their attention to a numberoffish populations. Whilst the consequence for those populations of animals is profound, the relationship between humans in respect of those populations also appears to alter. This presentation explores the rules relating to the proprietorship of animals as they have developed from the time of their possible adoption to the modern day and emphasises that those rules recognise the changing relationship with populations of animals. The presentation concludes with a consideration of the application of those rules to populations offish under the English common law system.
