SEX DIFFERENTIATION AND HERMAPHRODITISM OF SHARPSNOUT SEABREAM (DIPLODUS PUNTAZZO) IN CAPTIVITY

Sex differentiation in fish is a labile process, depending both on genetic and environmental factors. Hermaphroditism is not uncommon among fishes, and protogyny, protandry and rudimentary hermaphroditism have been shown in a number of species. The aim of the present study was to acquire information on sex differentiation and sex strategy of sharpsnOut seabream Diplodus puntazzo in captivity during the first three years of life. Such information is necessary for managing captive broodstocks in commercial aquaculrure facilities, and ensuring optimal egg production.
